Everyone wants to change the world, right? How many of us feel that way but also feel discouraged when we hit adulthood and realize that each of us is only one person and can potentially do very little to effect change in the big, big world unless we're in positions of power? Well, take heart. Even if you're not in a position of power, you can quite literally use your power to make a difference.
Before I cover the how, I want to explain the why by highlighting each of 10 charities who are working to effect that change that our 10-year-old selves dreamed of being responsible for.
Direct Relief
Direct Relief focuses on humanitarian and disaster relief in the US and around much of the globe. The organization strives to offer support and resources for people who have been impacted by poverty, disease, or disaster. According to the DirectRelief Website, "Direct Relief works to equip health professionals in resource-poor communities to meet the challenges of diagnosing and caring for people in need."
GiveDirectly
If you get concerned when donating to charities about where the money actually goes and whether it's being distributed effectively, you may want to check out GiveDirectly. It's an organization where the money goes directly to people living in poverty. GiveDirectly believes that people living in poverty, "deserve the dignity to choose for themselves how best to improve their lives -- cash enables that choice." According to the GiveDirectly website, "Donors have delivered over $550 million to people in need." Their research shows that the recipients of these donations spend the money on medicine, farm animals, education, and other essentials such as water and transportation.
IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare)
Generally, charities focus on human tragedies. However, we all know that even the toughest of us tend to tear up at the thought of a puppy suffering. IFAW helps the pets of Ukrainian refugees affected by the war with Russia, as well as animal shelters and animal rescue efforts. They've provided food, water, and support for more than 42,000 animals so far, ranging from dogs and cats to tigers and bears, according to the IFAW website. If you have a soft spot for our furry friends, IFAW might be the place to focus you're inner hero.
Khan Academy
As a parent and a former teacher, I've heard the name "Khan Academy" more times than I can count. No one instruction method works for every single student, and not everyone has access to a solid education. Khan Academy offers personalized learning opportunities in "math, grammar, science, history, SAT®, AP®, and more" to students in grades K-12 and early college. It also offers teachers tools for tracking student progress and personalizing student learning. These resources are provided free of charge, thanks to generous donations. You can learn more at the Khan Academy website.
Movement 4 Black Lives
The Movement for Black Lives was founded in 2014 "under the fundamental idea that we can achieve more together than we can separately." The M4BL serves as a space for Black organizers to debate, assess the needed of political intervention, and "create a shared movement wide strategy". For more information about the M4BL and to view a list of their current campaigns visit the M4BL website.
OMF (Open Medicine Foundation)
The OMF, as stated on their website, "envisions improved health care for patients suffering from multisystem chronic, complex diseases with collaboration between patients, clinicians, and researchers." Their goal is to find effective treatments for "chronic complex diseases", and their focus is on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). I know. It's a mouthful. The disease can affect both adults and children. Contributing to this foundation can help the hero in you offer hope to those who are suffering from ME/CFA, as well as other chronic diseases, such as Long COVID, fibromyalgia, and chronic Lyme disease.
Replate
Do you find it mind boggling the sheer volume of the food produced in America that never gets eaten when there are people going without meals and going to bed hungry? So do I, which is why I find this organization intriguing. Replate is an app that connects stores and restaurants with surplus food to nonprofit organizations supporting communities suffering from food insecurity. Their efforts help, not only hungry people, but the planet, as well. Decomposing food in landfills emits Methane and CO2 gasses, which can have a negative impact on the Earth. Reducing the amount of food waste, in turn, reduces the dangerous gasses and other wastes of resources caused by surplus food being discarded in landfills. Learn more at the Replate website.
SENS Research Foundation
I think many, if not most, people have or know someone who has a loved one who's slowly faded away due to Alzheimer's or battled with cardiovascular disease or diabetes. SENS is performing research in an effort to work toward curing age related diseases such as these. If fighting the health battles related to aging hypes your inner warrior, you can learn more at the SENS website.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
As Arizona Robbins was constantly reminding people on "Grey's Anatomy", everyone wants to help the "tiny humans"! St. Jude children's Research Hospital provides treatment to children and help with travel, housing, and/or food for the families, free of charge. They've made it their mission to "advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment," according to the St. Jude website. You can use your power to help the tiny humans.
WeForest
As our amazing Coin Sage, Steven Godshall described it to me, WeForest works on conserving forests and natural habitats to help prevent global warming and offset carbon emissions. If you would like to learn more about how WeForest works toward "a positive impact for people and our planet", check out the WeForest website.
What does this have to do with you?
What do these charities have to do with power, you ask? Why is the Director of Communications of a cryptocurrency mining pool writing a blog post highlighting charities and giving us all the feels talking about suffering puppies and tiny humans? That would be because you can mine through PROHASHING and set aside a portion of your earnings to support any or all of the charities listed above. One person donating a few cents or dollars worth of crypto at a time doesn't seem like a lot, but when many people contribute small amounts, we can all make a difference together.
How does it work?
You pretty much keep doing you, and we take care of the rest. All you need to do to start mining toward charities is go to the Payout Options section of your PROHASHING ACCOUNT and click "Add Payout Option" as you normally would to add the cryptocurrency of your choice.
You will see the list of charities toward the top of the Payout Options box right below the ACH section, and it will look like this:

Select one of the charities, and click "Save". Set the percentage of your earnings you would like to go toward that charity, adjust the other coins' percentages so that all of your payout options total 100%, and you're on your way to helping save the world.
Takeaways?
You can do a lot with a little. Take your power and use it for good. Even if you already get that warm and fuzzy feeling listening to the hum of your rig and knowing that it's bringing you coins as you sit there watching, you can also support a worthy cause and connect with your inner 10 year old who wanted to single handedly solve world hunger. First step, mining for charity. Then, who knows what you're capable of?
UPDATE 2023-5-9: Ready to start mining to one of these awesome charities? Check out our Advanced Payout Features walkthrough to see how!
