Last night, 2022-11-29, power failed where our servers are located for approximately 5 hours. This has happened only 3 times in about 15 years. PROHASHING does have a generator for situations like this one; however, it did not work as expected when Chris attempted to start it up at the beginning of the power outage. After 2 hours of troubleshooting, Chris was able to ascertain the source of the trouble and get the generator running. From that point, it took about an hour more to bring our services back online from a cold start. Once the power came back on, swapping back to the grid was quick and easy with no downtime.
We are aware that, in the future, we need to look into solutions that include the purchase of a better generator, such as one powered by natural gas that would automatically kick in in case of an outage and/or batteries that would give us more of a buffer during which to switch over to the generator more seamlessly. Due to the situations surrounding BlockFi (Update on BlockFi and PROHASHING) and Genesis (Update on Genesis and PROHASHING and a thank you), we are not in a position to make such purchases at this time.
While we are currently unable to purchase new equipment that would decrease downtime in case of power outages, we are dedicated to doing our best to keep your service up and running as much as possible in these instances. Moving forward, we will be testing the generator every 6 months to make sure that those operating it are familiar with its operation and that it remains in working order. In doing so, we hope to significantly reduce any future downtime due to power outages.
Thank you all for your patience last night as we worked through this inconvenience and for the chance to improve, grow, and provide you the best service possible. We continue to be grateful for our PROHASHING miners.
